Medical Assistants are essential members of the health care team at St. Luke’s. They are employed in our primary care and specialty clinics, located in Duluth, Superior, Hibbing, Mountain Iron, Silver Bay, Two Harbors, and Ashland.

What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical Assistants perform a variety of tasks to assist Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other clinic staff in providing patient care. This may include the following, in addition to many more!

  • Checking vital signs
  • Discussing brief medical history
  • Performing procedures
  • Administrating medications and vaccines
  • Coordinating additional service such as lab or x-ray
  • Documenting in the patient's medical record
Am I required to have a medical assistant certification?

To be employed as a Medical Assistant at St. Luke's, you are required to have a certification or license within 120 days of hire in one of the following areas:

  • Medical Assistant
  • LPN
  • RN
  • EMT
  • Paramedic
  • RT

How much do medical assistants earn?

Starting pay for a Medical Assistant is over $17 per hour if you are a new graduate, and a higher earning potential for those with experience. However, the hourly wage is only part of your compensation package. We have a generous medical, dental, retirement and paid time off benefit plan offered to all employees hired into a position that is .60 FTE and above.

If I’m not already trained, where can I go to school?

Two schools in our region offer a medical assistant program, and both openings in the next round of admissions.

How long does school take?

Each program can be completed in approximately 12-15 months.

What will the job market be like after I graduate?

There is high demand for medical assistants and it’s expected to see dramatic growth. Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 29 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations.*
