Philosophy of care
Educate the patient regarding their problem and treatment options so they can be an active participant in the decision making process. I think this helps the patient feel invested in the treatment and recovery which improves understanding and outcomes.

Why Dr. Watkins went into medicine
Multiple athletic injuries growing up introduced me to orthopedics. I had great experiences with my orthopedic which created an early interest. This coupled with an enjoyment of building and doing things with my hands made orthopedics a natural match. I was an avid skier and learned to take advantage of Colorado's mountains. However, skiing was not the only way I kept active. I also participated in track, football, tennis, and basketball. My involvement in these activities exposed me to many different types of sports-related injuries, leading to my interest in sports medicine.

Favorite advice to give to patients
Motion is life and life is motion. We need to stay active in life to be happy and healthy.

Denver, CO

All outdoor activities, exercising and spending time with family/friends. As well as, slowly but surely learning how to play the guitar. I am especially interested in athletic injuries and helping people maintain their desired activity levels as long as possible. I chose to practice in Duluth because it is a great city in which to raise my family, and it offers a great balance of activities in both my personal and professional lives. A typical weekend for me includes enjoying outdoor activities with my wife and children, playing guitar or cheering on the Broncos and the Avalanche. I think with my lifestyle it is no surprise that driving a Ferrari is first on my bucket list.

Dr. Watkins is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and has been published in Clinical Anatomy, a peer-reviewed medical journal. He has also been fellowship trained in sports medicine; his specialties include replacing and reconstructing shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.
