Philosophy of care
The patient always comes first. To me each patient is a family member, and this philosophy helps me tailor my approach to care. I provide education on the condition the patient has, present all treatment options available, and then tailor the recommendation to best serve the patient, having them ultimately deciding on which treatment(s) he or she would like to pursue.
Why Dr. Irwin went into medicine
My mother was a pediatric nurse and my father had a cardiac condition, which he unfortunately passed from. Both of these factors motivated me to pursue medicine so that I could help others with their health. Also by having experienced loss at an early age, I feel that I’m uniquely positioned to empathize with patients and their families.
Favorite advice to give patients
One of my favorite quotes pertaining to medicine comes from the movie Patch Adams: ‘You treat the disease, you win, you lose; you treat the patient and you’ll always win.’ I can’t always guarantee a successful outcome, but I can guarantee that I’ll give my very best effort for each patient. Therefore, my best advice for patients is to choose a doctor who truly cares for you as an individual and doesn’t just treat diseases.

I enjoy long distance running along Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, photography, reading, writing, and cooking. I’m also starting to get into biking and swimming and hope to complete my first Ironman triathlon!

Prior to joining St. Luke’s, I served as Associate Program Director at Wayne State University and am excited to have the opportunity to continue teaching medical students at UMD.
