Q: What is happening?
A: Aspirus Health is actively working to reach a new contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota (BCBSMN) that more adequately covers the cost of the care we deliver to our patients with BCBSMN.
Q: Who does this impact?
A: We are dedicated to negotiating in good faith. These negotiations do not impact the coverage people receive from BCBSMN for any care provided by Aspirus in 2025.
Q: When does the current contract end?
A: Our current contract ends December 31, 2025. We believe it is important to understand the situation, so people can make informed patient care and insurance decisions for 2026 in the event an agreement is not reached.
Q: Can I still see my provider at this point?
A: Yes. Our existing agreement expires after December 31, 2025. For now, nothing changes for our patients.
Q: What happens if a new agreement is not reached?
A: If both parties are unable to find common ground, effective December 31, 2025, Aspirus facilities in Minnesota will be considered out of the BCBSMN network. If BCBSMN forces Aspirus out of its network, patients may experience higher out-of-pocket costs when seeking care with their trusted Aspirus provider in 2026.
Q: Why is this happening?
A: Our existing contract with BCBSMN does not reflect the cost of delivering sustainable, accessible, excellent care. Aspirus is simply seeking an equitable agreement with BCBSMN that reflects today’s reality: the cost of delivering excellent care is greater than it has ever been, and inflationary pressures and historic Medicaid cuts are significantly impacting our entire cost structure. Any contract must put patients first, or we cannot continue to improve the health of our communities.
Q: Does this include Medicare beneficiaries who have Blue Cross Blue Shield MN as a supplement?
A: Those with BCBSMN as a supplemental payor should not be impacted.
