Anus and Rectum

Below is a list of anal and rectum issues commonly treated by our experienced general surgery team.

Common issues we treat

Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids are a very common condition. They result from increased pressure on the anus. This can happen due to pregnancy, childbirth or constipation. The pressure causes the normal anal veins and tissue to swell. This tissue can bleed, often during bowel movements.

Anal fissures: An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus. This causes painful bowel movements and bleeding. Anal fissures are very common in infants, but they may occur at any age.

Anorectal abscess: An anorectal abscess is a collection of pus in the anal and rectal area. Common symptoms are swelling around the anus and a constant, throbbing pain with swelling. Pain may be severe with bowel movements, coughing and sitting.

St. Luke’s expert team of general surgeons and physician assistants offer surgical consults at these locations.
