The Schroth Method for Scoliosis

As a nonsurgical treatment option for scoliosis, St. Luke’s offers the Schroth Method. New to the United States within the past 15 years, the Schroth Method utilizes exercises customized for each individual’s unique curve. These exercises are designed to de-rotate, elongate and stabilize the spine, preventing scoliosis from advancing and decreasing symptoms. The Schroth Method can also be used to treat kyphosis, lordosis and flat back symptoms.

To begin, a physical therapist will evaluate the current curve of the spine. Then, an individualized home exercise program will be designed. The number of sessions with the physical therapist will vary according to individual needs.

Depending on factors subject to age and bone maturity, outcomes can include:

  • Improved posture
  • Improved core stability
  • Easier breathing
  • Less pain
  • Ability to continue in sports and activities
  • Improved self-management

For a physical therapy evaluation, ask your physician for a referral. For more information, call 218.249.6040.
