Footcare 101: 5 Tips for Happy Feet

Posted On:

When was the last time you thought about your feet? Unless something is wrong with them, it’s probably been a while. But these unsung heroes carry you everywhere you go and deserve some attention!

So, as a podiatrist, here are my five favorite tips for healthy feet.

1. Choose the right footwear.

Proper footwear is so important for maintaining healthy feet. Ill-fitting shoes can lead to a lot of issues, including bunions, corns and even plantar fasciitis. When selecting shoes, pick pairs that offer adequate support, have a spacious toe box, and are made from breathable materials to prevent moisture buildup.

2. Practice good hygiene.

At least once a day, wash your feet with soap and water, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes. Afterward, thoroughly dry and moisturize them to prevent dryness and cracking. Regularly trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails and change your socks as often as needed to maintain freshness.

3. Do foot stretches and exercises.

Simple exercises incorporated into your daily routine will strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries. Every day, do a few ankle circles, or roll a tennis ball or massage cylinder under your feet. If you have arch pain and plantar fasciitis, rolling a frozen water bottle under your feet is a great way to stretch and relieve pain.

4. Give your feet some extra TLC.

Enjoy a relaxing foot soak or a massage to alleviate fatigue, improve circulation and promote overall foot health. If you stand and walk a lot, invest in supportive orthotic inserts or custom-made orthotics to provide extra cushioning and support.

5. Address issues as soon as possible.

Whether it's a dull ache or sharp discomfort, it's crucial to address any pain promptly by consulting a podiatrist. You can also see a podiatrist for issues like bunions, corns and callouses, diabetic foot education and care, plantar fasciitis and toenail issues. Early intervention can prevent problems from worsening and impacting your mobility and overall quality of life.
