Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time during my pregnancy to attend childbirth education classes?

Two months before your due date; however we encourage you to attend at anytime during your pregnancy.

Who teaches the classes?

Knowledgeable health care professionals  teach the classes. You can rely on their expertise for answers to your questions.

What is the deadline for pre-registration?

Because we can accommodate a large number of participants in our classes, you will get into the classes you want. However, to ensure we have the proper number of instructors, materials and supplies, we urge you to register as soon as possible.

What information is needed for registration?

Your name, due date, your physician's name, name of person attending class with you, if applicable, and payment information. If you're registering for the Sibling Class, provide each child's name, age and gender.

Where are classes held?

All classes (except Bonus Night) are in St. Luke's hospital auditorium. Enter the main lobby (10th Avenue East and First Street). Continue down the hall to the center stairs or take the elevator to 2nd floor, take a right on the 2nd floor to the auditorium. (Look for overhead green directional signs).
Bonus Night is in room 329A in the SLH Clinic Building, located at 1011 East First Street. Take the elevator to the Third Floor, turn left, then right to the end of the hall or you can enter from St. Luke's hospital's Main Lobby. Enter the Main lobby, take the first bank of elevators (East) to 3rd floor, take a left and continue to the end of the hall.

Will my insurance cover the cost of classes?

Some insurance companies pay for some classes. Please refer to your own policy and verify coverage.  If you are covered, please bring a copy of your card to class. We also accept cash or check at the door, or a credit/debit card payment may be made  ahead of time by phone. We are unable to process credit card payments at class.

Do I need to bring anything to class?

  • Room temperatures vary, dress in layers
  • Labor and Delivery or Refresher Course: pillow and blanket
  • Breastfeeding Class: life-sized baby doll or teddy bear
  • Sibling Class: Life-sized baby doll or teddy bear

Are snacks provided?
Yes.

In case of bad weather, how will I know if class is cancelled?

We will make every attempt to contact you by phone. Feel free to call the Education Department at 218-249-5527 or 218-249-5139. If the Education department is closed, call the Birthing Center at 218-249-5605, or the hospital operator at 218-249-5555.

 

Where do I park?

There are several options for parking:

  • On street parking on the street after 5:30 p.m.
  • Pavilion Surgery Center parking lot-across from the hospital main entrance (10th Avenue East and First Street)
  • Northland Medical Center ramp (1000 East First Street)
  • SLH Clinic Building parking lot (1011 East First Street). Please refer to directions and parking on the St. Luke's website homepage under hospital information, map & directions.
