Our History
St. Luke's was the first hospital in the city of Duluth. It was founded in 1881 in response to the typhoid epidemic that was ravaging the city. What began in a small room above a blacksmith's shop has now grown into a regional health care system with the same strong focus on patient care.
A History of Firsts
Along with being Duluth's first hospital, St. Luke's has continued to show medical leadership.
- First area hospital to offer an alternative to traditional birthing rooms
- First coordinated trauma center in the region
- First federally designated trauma center in the region
- First to be verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level II trauma center
The Patient. Above All Else.
St. Luke's is committed to leading health care in our region. And we do it the way we always have—by putting the patient first.
