Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research
Information for Patients
The Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research performs clinical research studies utilizing resources available at both St. Luke's and the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth.
What is the Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research?
The Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research was established in 1996 in fulfillment of a trust bequest of Duluth resident Miss Muriel Whiteside who desired there be a joint effort between St. Luke's and the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth to support patient oriented clinical research with special emphasis in the areas of cancer, lung and heart disease. The Institute emphasizes clinical research in these and other specialty areas. Support for Whiteside Institute research activities also comes from collaboration with both government agencies (such as the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health) and pharmaceutical companies.
What are Clinical Research Studies?
They are studies conducted with patients to evaluate a drug, device or other treatment. The studies look for new or better, safe and effective ways to diagnose, prevent or treat disease.
Who Conducts the Clinical Research Studies?
An experienced research staff guides the clinical research studies. The research team includes physicians, research nurses, pharmacists Whiteside research specialists and assistants and other hospital and clinic staff all working together. Physicians participating in clinical research have experience in a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, including acute and chronic diseases and benign and malignant conditions.
Why Might You Consider Being Part of a Clinical Research Study?
In its continuing effort to improve the health of individuals, the medical community seeks to find different ways to improve standard treatments, discover new treatments, and find safer more effective treatments. Clinical research is an important step in bringing new medications or new medical devices to the public. All medications and medical devices approved in the United States have involved research volunteers.
Participants in clinical research studies may have access to treatments that are not available to the general public. Our objective is to promote and participate in clinical research utilizing new technologies and treatments in order to learn more about normal and abnormal body function and the cause, progression, prevention, treatment and control of human disease.
