Help Delete Blood Cancer at Donor Drive

Posted On:

Help save a life by getting your cheek swabbed on September 28.

That's the message at a bone marrow donor registration drive being held at St. Luke's Lester River Medical Clinic to coincide with Lester River Rendezvous.

Tanya Pitoscia, LPN, a clinical assistant at St. Luke's Lester River Medical Clinic, was inspired to hold the donor drive after a friend needed help finding a donor in the same way.

"The more people you have in your pool of potential donors, the better your chances of being able to save a life," she said.

Over the years, Tanya and her family have made a point of getting involved with causes from breast cancer to Alzheimer's, and Tanya feels it's good for her two boys to see the difference they can make by helping others.

"My family likes to try to take on a 'give-back thing' every year," she said. "Five hundred people is my goal for this drive."

Bone marrow donation helps patients with various forms of blood cancer (leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are the three main types of blood cancer). The event on September 28 will add people to the National Bone Marrow Registry, and is run in partnership with Delete Blood Cancer DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center.

The bone marrow donor registration drive will be held at St. Luke's Lester River Medical Clinic on Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The clinic is located at 6351 East Superior Street, Duluth, MN.
