Dr. Andrew Thompson, St. Luke's Infectious Disease AssociatesBeginning now through November, flu shots will be available at St. Luke’s primary care clinics during regular clinic hours. To make it convenient to receive the vaccination, anyone may call to schedule an appointment during clinic hours or receive the flu shot during a previously-scheduled appointment.

Receiving a flu shot is something that should not be overlooked. During flu season, the influenza virus is circulating at a higher rate than normal, and receiving the flu vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk of contracting the flu virus and spreading it. Dr. Andrew Thompson of St. Luke’s Infectious Disease Associates said, “Receiving the flu vaccination is not just about protecting you; it is also protecting loved ones around you and at-risk populations such as babies, pregnant women and the elderly.”

Every year the flu is different and it affects people differently. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone starting at the age of 6 months receives a flu vaccination. Influenza causes hundreds of deaths in the United States each year and tens of thousands of people are hospitalized. “I highly encourage people to become vaccinated to help prevent the flu from spreading in our community,” said Dr. Thompson.
