Volunteer Areas

Your special skills, interests and time commitments are matched with the hospital’s needs. You may choose to work directly with patients, families and visitors or in an ongoing role in a hospital department.

The following opportunities are available:

Admission Services

Escort patients to their rooms and familiarize them with the room, assist with luggage, run errands and return wheelchairs to proper departments, deliver patient mail.

Afghan Project
Knit, crochet afghans for radiation oncology patients, done at home.

Book & Magazine Cart
Offer books and magazines on loan to patients in their rooms and stock waiting areas with magazines.

Book Time with Your Baby
Present books to new mothers in the morning or afternoon.

Breast Center Reception
Greet patients, perform clerical duties, and answer the phone.

Call clergy to inform them when members of their congregations are hospitalized, restock brochure racks, and distribute Bibles to patient rooms.

Clerical Projects
Perform clerical duties as needed in a specific department.

Clinic Volunteer
At Denfeld Medical Center, Mariner Medical Clinic, Mount Royal Medical Center and Miller Creek Medical Clinic. Transport patients and specimens, do simple filing and typing, make phone calls.

Computer/Data Entry Projects
Perform computer functions for various departments.

Day Surgery
Assist nursing staff with discharge of patients, run errands, and perform clerical duties. Provide patients with supplemental services.

Department Mail Cart
Sort and deliver mail to hospital departments.

Flower Delivery
Deliver flowers to patients in their rooms.

Gift Shop
Assist customers in making selections, arrange displays, mark merchandise and ring up cash or credit sales.

Hospice Care
Provide services for patients and families through St. Luke’s Hospice Duluth® program. (Separate orientation required.)

Hospitality Cart
Serve coffee and cocoa to patients and visitors during the evening.

Information Desk
Answer the telephone, greet and direct visitors, sort mail.

Intensive Care Waiting Area
Greet and direct families and visitors and provide information to family members.

Perform clerical duties, shelve books, and sort materials.

Medical Records
Perform various clerical duties.

Mount Royal Fitness Center
Greet members, assist therapist, and perform clerical duties.

Muffin/Beverage Cart
Take coffee and muffins to family members waiting for patients in all the waiting areas.

Nursing Units
Provide nursing units with assistance in clerical support services and patient care.

Occupational Medicine
Perform clerical duties.

Perform clerical duties.

Patient Waiting Area
Greet and communicate information to patients using the waiting area.

Read stories and play games with children, supervise the playroom as requested.

Physical Medicine
Pre-physical therapy students observe physical and occupational therapists and assist as requested.

Special Agents
Provide specialized caring services to patients, families and visitors at St. Luke’s in the evening.

Surgical Waiting Area
Serve as a liaison for families and visitors who are waiting for surgery patients by keeping them informed of the patient’s status. Escort families to pre-/post-op area and doctor consultation.

The Volunteer Services Director may ask you to perform a service that is not listed here, as special requests are made of the volunteers from time to time. You are under no obligation to accept any assignment you are not trained for or feel comfortable doing.
