Nitrous Oxide for Pain Control During Labor
We are proud to have many different options for pain control during labor.
Our goal is to provide moms with all the methods they would want, which
is why we now offer nitrous oxide for pain management. St. Luke’s
is the only hospital in our region to offer this lower intervention method
of pain management that’s completely in your control.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, can be used through labor to
reduce stress or pain associated with contractions. To use it, a mother
places the mask on her face and inhales for about 30 seconds before a
contraction begins. This allows the gas to reach peak effect at the time
of the contraction. Nitrous oxide is an alternative to an epidural or
narcotic therapy, so it cannot be used at the same time. For more information
about this option for pain management, view our
nitrous oxide fact sheet.
